On the night of February 21, 2025, Officers Reese and Girvin conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with expired plates in Virginia Beach. The driver, identified as John McCoy III, became uncooperative and, during a physical altercation, produced a firearm and shot both officers. Officer Reese was pronounced dead shortly after midnight, and Officer Girvin succumbed to his injuries later that morning. McCoy was later found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound nearby.
