OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On February 24, 2025, at approximately 11:36 a.m., Boulder Police Department received a welfare check request for 20-year-old Joshua Provenza, who was reportedly armed and threatening to harm himself and others. Around 1:38 p.m., University of Colorado Boulder Police were alerted to a man on campus who dropped a firearm from his clothing, then fled the area. Authorities connected the two incidents and identified Provenza, who had an active domestic violence protection order and was allegedly seeking a former romantic partner. At approximately 3:00 p.m., officers located Provenza's vehicle on 40th Street near Table Mesa Drive. Despite negotiations during a four-hour standoff, Provenza died by suicide at around 7:15 p.m. The incident prompted temporary shelter-in-place orders for nearby residents and the university community.
