OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
James Rider, a 31-year-old male, died on September 9, 2022, while incarcerated at Mat-Su Pretrial Facility in Palmer, Alaska. He had been in custody for 10 days on charges including trespassing and removing his ankle monitor. During his incarceration, Rider expressed feelings of hopelessness and was placed on suicide precautions. Despite these measures, he was found unresponsive in his cell and later pronounced dead.
Following his death, the ACLU of Alaska and the law firm Friedman Rubin filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Sheriff's Office on behalf of Rider's family, alleging inadequate mental health care during his incarceration. Rider was a father of three, and his family continues to seek accountability for the circumstances surrounding his death.
