On October 5, 2022, 33-year-old Gershun Freeman died while in custody at the Shelby County Jail in Memphis, Tennessee. Surveillance footage revealed that Freeman, experiencing a psychotic episode, ran naked from his cell and was subsequently restrained and beaten by at least ten corrections officers. The medical examiner determined that his death resulted from an exacerbation of cardiovascular disease due to physical altercation and subdual, classifying it as a homicide. In September 2023, nine corrections deputies were indicted on charges ranging from second-degree murder to aggravated assault in connection with Freeman's death.
