On February 26, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m., 18-year-old Lane Stiff was operating a motorcycle on Highway 544 near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Horry County Police officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Stiff continued driving. Police escalated a chase, which led to him colliding with a vehicle at the intersection of Highway 544 and Highway 814. He died at the crash site. Police did not disclose whether they chased him for any reason other than failure to stop.
