OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/07/2025, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Scottsdale Police Department officers responded to reports of an armed man threatening another individual near Scottsdale Road and McKellips Road. Before officers arrived, Joseph Santos, 42, left the area. Officers later located his vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but he did not stop. Shortly after, Santos returned to the original location and parked behind a patrol vehicle. He did not comply with police commands and reached for an object inside his vehicle. A K-9 unit was deployed, and during the confrontation, police opened fire, killing Santos. A K-9 was also shot and was transported to a veterinary hospital in stable condition. The Mesa Police Department is conducting an investigation.
