On 03/13/2025, McKinney police responded to a shooting at the Red Roof Inn on North Central Expressway. They found a 52-year-old woman with gunshot wounds. She was hospitalized in stable condition. Freddie Ware, 43, barricaded himself in his motel room. During negotiations, Ware threatened to shoot everyone. When officers deployed K-9 Azi into the room, Ware opened fire, killing the dog. Officers returned fire, striking Ware. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died. The Texas Rangers are investigating.
