On March 15, 2025, at approximately 7:07 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to a single-vehicle accident on Highway 101 near Ralph Lane in Prunedale. The driver, 42-year-old James Combs of Salinas, had crashed his car into a guardrail. Upon arrival, a CHP officer encountered Combs, who allegedly produced a pocket knife with a 4-inch blade. Police shot and killed him. The Monterey County District Attorney's Office is investigating the shooting.
