Around 12:41 a.m., deputies from the Smyth County Sheriff's Office responded to a 9-1-1 call about a person being shot at a residence on the 4200 block of Bluegrass Trail in Saltville, Virginia. Upon arrival, a male approached a deputy while armed with a handgun. The deputy opened fire and killed the man. The deputy was placed on administrative leave per protocol. Virginia State Police are conducting the investigation. The name of the deceased has not been released.
