On March 18, 2025, Savannah Police Department officers were involved in a high-speed pursuit of a silver Jeep Compass driven by a man linked to a previous shooting at the Westlake Apartments. Police chased him to Liberty Parkway, where his vehicle collided with a maroon Chevrolet Malibu driven by 60-year-old Darren Lewis, who was attempting to enter Liberty Parkway from Upson Street. The impact struck the driver's side of Lewis's vehicle, resulting in his immediate death at the scene. The Georgia State Patrol is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Darren Lewis, a husband, father, and ex-Marine, was remembered by neighbors in the Liberty City community as a kind and quiet individual who brought positivity to those around him. John Jackson, a neighbor, remarked, "He was cool people, he was quiet, he didn’t make no noise, just laugh and talk." Another neighbor, Doreather Woods, shared, "Everything I know about him was nice... He was just a nice person." A memorial with flowers and a cross was established along Liberty Parkway to honor his memory.
