On March 19, 2025, at approximately 3:30 a.m., 50-year-old Jose Juan Tovar of Shafter was found unresponsive in his cell at the Lerdo Justice Facility in Bakersfield. Despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Tovar had been arrested the previous day, March 18, for a violation of post-release community supervision. His criminal history includes charges dating back to 1993, such as sexual battery, DUI, and first-degree burglary. The Kern County Coroner's Office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
