On March 23, 2025, around 3:47 a.m., Hillsborough County deputies responded to a domestic violence call at a home on Lake Montauk Drive in Riverview. They found a woman outside with visible injuries who said her boyfriend, Manuel Alvarez, was inside armed with a gun. As deputies approached, Alvarez reportedly shouted threats and pointed a firearm at them. Deputy Shawn Swinford opened fire and shot Alvarez twice in the upper torso. Alvarez was transported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent investigation.
