OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On March 23, 2025, at approximately 6:30 p.m., detention officers at the Georgetown County Detention Center discovered 40-year-old James Edward McCray unresponsive in a cell. McCray was transported to Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. McCray had been booked into the detention center on March 22, 2025, on charges of driving under suspension and failure to pay child support. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, as is standard procedure. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
