On March 24, 2025, 62-year-old Larry Flett, a former Springfield officer and solid waste operations associate for the City of Springfield, was involved in a fatal accident at the Springfield Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill. While operating an articulated dump truck, the vehicle overturned and caught fire, leading to his death. Flett had been employed at the landfill for nearly two years and had previously served as a Springfield police officer from 1989 to 1998. The landfill was closed following the incident, and an internal review by the Department of Environmental Services is underway.
