On March 21, 2025, Brandy Carla Matthews, 39, was arrested by the Georgetown Police Department for a shoplifting incident and subsequently placed in the detox unit of the Georgetown County Detention Center. The following afternoon, detention center staff observed Matthews experiencing a medical emergency. The facility's medical team provided assistance until Georgetown County EMS arrived. Matthews was transported to Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
