On March 28, 2025, at approximately 1:45 p.m., Greensboro Police Department officers responded to a shooting on I-85 South near mile marker 131 involving 29-year-old Edmond Johnson and another tractor-trailer driver. Following the incident, Johnson fled to Carroll County, Virginia. The Carroll County Sheriff's Office located Johnson's Swift tractor-trailer at Love's Travel Stop off I-77, Exit 1, in Lambsburg. Upon exiting his vehicle, Johnson exchanged gunfire with deputies, resulting in his death. Two deputies were injured during the shootout and were transported to local hospitals; both are reported to be in stable condition. Johnson was also wanted in Washington County, Maryland, by the Maryland State Police Department.
