OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On March 29, 2025, at approximately 4:45 p.m., the Oxford County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call from an 80-year-old man reporting a domestic assault by his stepson, 51-year-old Eric Newell, at a residence on Tucker Road in Hartford. Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation, but Newell exited the home and approached them with a knife. Deputies Reece Rodrique and Derek MacDonald opened fire, fatally wounding Newell. Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave, as per standard protocol, while the Office of the Maine Attorney General investigates the use of deadly force.
