On April 18, 2025, 34-year-old Wayne Volz held his parents hostage for several hours at their home in Fort Meade, Florida. During the standoff, he pistol-whipped his mother and threatened his father's life. Volz later accompanied his father to a hardware store in Bartow, where his father managed to discreetly alert authorities. As deputies and officers approached the scene, Volz shot a Polk County deputy in the forearm and a Bartow police officer in the chest—both survived. Officers opened fire during the confrontation in the parking lot of the Atkins Building on North Broadway Avenue. Volz was shot multiple times and later died at the hospital. The incident remains under investigation.
