OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On April 26, 2025, Columbia County deputies attempted to serve a temporary protective order to James Blake Montgomery, 38, during a traffic stop on I-20 near Exit 194. Initially cooperative, Montgomery suddenly opened fire with a converted fully automatic 9mm AR pistol, fatally shooting Deputy Brandon Sikes and critically injuring Deputy Gavin White. Deputies Andrew Brown and Jared Mason returned fire. Montgomery attempted to flee in his RV but crashed into a median barrier. He was later found dead inside the RV. Investigators discovered pipe bombs, firearms, and bomb-making materials in the vehicle. Deputy White underwent surgery and remains in critical condition.
