OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On April 26, 2025, North Charleston Police attempted a traffic stop on a 2014 U-Haul box truck at Dorchester Road and Meeting Street Road. The driver did not stop, and police escalated a pursuit that continued along Dorchester Road onto Interstate 26 eastbound. Officers discontinued the chase near Columbus and King Streets, but the box truck kept traveling. The truck struck two pedestrians at Columbus and Meeting Streets, then crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2022 Mercedes sedan. The Mercedes hit a Honda motorcycle, which then hit a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe. One occupant of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. Two pedestrians, three occupants of the Mercedes, and one occupant of the U-Haul were hospitalized with injuries. The driver and passenger of the U-Haul were arrested and reportedly claimed to be sovereign citizens. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation.
