On April 27, 2025, around 4:36 p.m., law enforcement responded to a home in the 3600 block of South Washington Street in Marion, Indiana, following reports of a man in mental health crisis who had sustained a self-inflicted neck wound. Officers encountered 56-year-old Derick P. Morgan bleeding and holding a knife. Despite repeated commands to disarm, Morgan allegedly charged at a Marion police officer. A deputy from the Grant County Sheriff's Department discharged a firearm, striking Morgan. He was pronounced dead in his home.
