OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/02/2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Delaware State Police responded to reports of a red Ford F-150 driving erratically on Route 9 near Harbeson Road. Troopers located the vehicle on Coolspring Road near Fisher Road and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, identified as 44-year-old Gregory Painter of Milford, failed to stop and led police on a pursuit. The vehicle eventually stopped in the 28000 block of West Springside Drive. Painter exited the truck holding a knife and entered an occupied residence he did not own. He then exited the home, still armed, and advanced toward troopers despite repeated commands to drop the weapon. Two troopers opened fire, striking Painter. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Delaware Department of Justice is conducting the use-of-force investigation, and the troopers have been placed on administrative leave.
