On May 1, 2025, George Oliver Crafter, a 62-year-old inmate, was found dead in his cell at the Bibb County LEC in Macon, Georgia. Crafter was being held at the Bibb County Jail for the Upson County Sheriff's Office. He was found by corrections deputies around 5 a.m. and was pronounced dead just before 7 a.m. The cause of death is currently unknown. The inmate had an extensive medical history, according to medical staff, and an autopsy will be performed. The incident is being investigated by Internal Affairs Investigators from the Bibb Sheriff's Office of Professional Standards.The release from the sheriff's office also mentioned that the jail has faced several violent incidents recently, including stabbings and an incident in which an inmate was scalded with boiling water. The Human and Civil Rights Coalition of Georgia had already planned a protest of conditions at the Bibb LEC on May 28th, 2025.
