On May 5, 2025, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Michigan State Police troopers assigned to the Metro Detroit Auto-Theft Recovery Team (MDART) were conducting an undercover investigation in the 20200 block of Murray Hill Street on Detroit's west side. During the operation, 23-year-old Martez Hunter Britt exited a vehicle and allegedly opened fire on the troopers, striking one officer three times, injuring him. Troopers returned fire, fatally wounding Britt. The injured trooper was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital and was reported to be in serious but stable condition.
Family members of Britt have expressed skepticism regarding the official account, questioning whether the undercover officers identified themselves as law enforcement prior to the shooting.
