OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On May 6, 2025, at approximately 5:57 a.m., Dane County Jail staff found 49-year-old Jeffrey Endres unresponsive in his cell. Endres was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been charged the previous day with multiple felonies, including first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, and mistreatment of animals causing death. These charges stemmed from an incident on April 28, 2025, in Cottage Grove, where Endres allegedly drove his vehicle into a family walking their dog, resulting in the deaths of 41-year-old Dr. Kami Hansen and the family dog, and injuries to Hansen's husband and 13-year-old son. The motive, according to prosecutors, was retaliation for a "sensitive crime" allegedly committed by a Hansen family member against a child in Endres' family. An autopsy was conducted, but the cause and manner of Endres' death remain undetermined pending further investigation. The Madison Police Department is leading the investigation into the in-custody death.
