On 05/08/2025, at approximately 2:39 p.m., deputies from the Butte County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a woman threatening someone at a property on Butte Creek Island Road near Honey Run Road in Butte Creek Canyon. Upon arrival, deputies encountered 48-year-old Valerie Ann Cadwallader of Chico, who had a rifle. According to the sheriff's office, Cadwallader pointed the rifle at the deputies and told them to shoot her. A deputy fired one round from his service rifle, striking Cadwallader. Deputies provided immediate medical aid, and she was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The incident is under investigation by the Butte County Officer Involved Shooting Protocol Team, which includes the Butte County District Attorney’s Office, with assistance from the California Department of Justice.
