OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On the morning of May 15, 2025, around 8:30 AM, Central Police Department officers initiated a pursuit of a 2005 Honda Accord driven by 32-year-old Jeremy Basquette. The chase proceeded west on Highway 93 towards Clemson. As Basquette attempted to exit onto Highway 76, his vehicle veered off the left side of the road, struck an embankment, and overturned. Emergency responders transported Basquette to Prisma Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Pickens County Coroner determined the cause of death to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, not injuries from the crash. Authorities later indicated that Basquette may be connected to the disappearance of 68-year-old Steve Whitmire, who was reported missing from his home on Whitmire Hill Road late Wednesday night. The incident is under investigation by multiple agencies, including the Pickens County Sheriff's Office, South Carolina Highway Patrol, Central Police Department, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
