OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On May 17, 2025, at approximately 6:05 a.m., corrections officers at the Washington County Jail in Kansas discovered 42-year-old inmate Kyle E. Mashburn unresponsive in his cell. Emergency medical services were summoned, and life-saving measures were attempted; however, Mashburn was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that Mashburn may have taken his own life while awaiting sentencing. He had previously pleaded guilty to charges of rape and child sexual exploitation, with a recommended sentence of nearly 25 years in prison. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death, and an autopsy has been scheduled.
