On May 17, 2025, a man in a wheelchair was fatally shot by an Austin police officer in South Austin. The individual was reportedly blocking traffic at the intersection of Cannonleague Drive and West William Cannon Drive, holding what appeared to be a firearm. Upon arrival, officers observed the man with the weapon in his lap. As officers approached, the man attempted to evade them by moving up a bridge ramp in his wheelchair. He then turned to face the officer and began moving backward. Police fired six shots, killing the man. The “weapon” was later identified as a replica BB gun.
