OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On May 21, 2025, around 12:15 a.m., Richland County deputies responded to reports of two individuals breaking into vehicles at an apartment complex on Hunt Club Road. Upon arrival, deputies encountered 20-year-old Degeorge Darby and another man. Both fled on foot. During the pursuit, Darby fired two shots at Deputy Richard Jeffcoat and his K-9 partner, Kiro, striking Kiro in the ear. Deputy Jeffcoat returned fire, hitting Darby multiple times. Darby was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. K-9 Kiro received medical treatment and is expected to recover. The firearm used by Darby was reported stolen earlier in May.
