On May 29, 2025, Albuquerque Police Department SWAT officers attempted to apprehend 39-year-old Jorge Dominguez at the Comfort Suites hotel near the Albuquerque Sunport. Dominguez retreated into his hotel room, broke a window, and jumped out of it. During the confrontation outside, APD deployed K-9 officer Rebel to engage Dominguez. Dominguez was bitten by the dog and then produced a handgun. A shootout ensued between Dominguez and multiple SWAT officers. Dominguez was shot and killed at the scene. Police K9 Rebel was also fatally shot during the exchange; it remains unclear from released reports whether Dominguez or officers fired the fatal shot at the dog.
