OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On May 28, 2025, deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call about a suicidal man making threats of violence. Michael Anthony Koch, 41, had reportedly sent text messages claiming he had shot himself and would shoot any officers who approached. Deputies arrived at a residence on 18½ Mile Road near Centennial Road and encountered Koch on the back patio holding what appeared to be a rifle. He pointed the weapon at a deputy and shouted provocations. The deputy gave verbal commands, which Koch did not follow. The deputy opened fire and killed him. The weapon was later determined to be a BB gun. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave.
