OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On May 31, 2025, at approximately 1:45 a.m., a Monroe Police Department officer attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle on Old Charlotte Highway near Rocky River Road. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Joshua Hayden Sikes, did not stop. Police escalated a chase that ended on Goldmine Road near River Chase Drive, where Sikes exited the vehicle and opened fire on officers, striking a female officer multiple times. She was transported to a Charlotte hospital and is in stable condition.

Sikes fled into a wooded area. Police organized a manhunt involving K9 units, drones, and assistance from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department helicopter. At approximately 3:52 a.m., officers located Sikes, who was armed with a rifle. He fired at officers, who opened fire, fatally wounding him.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Sikes was Possibly involved in an earlier homicide.
