On May 31, 2025, around 8:46 p.m., Mobile Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop on Michael Collins, a 75-year-old man, on Dawes Road. Earlier that day, Collins had allegedly threatened to kill a woman, leading officers to intervene. During the stop, Collins reportedly displayed a firearm and made threats to harm himself. Officers attempted extended de-escalation tactics at the scene. According to police, Collins eventually pointed the firearm at officers, prompting them to open fire. Collins died at the scene. The involved officers were placed on administrative leave pending investigation. No body camera footage or additional evidence has been released publicly.
