On April 10, 2025, McHenry County deputies responded around 4:23 p.m. to a domestic disturbance at a home in the 300 block of Briarwood Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake. Deputies encountered 46-year-old Darrick Lawrence, who was reportedly armed and barricaded himself inside the house. A SWAT team and hostage negotiators were called in, but after hours of standoff, the situation escalated. A McHenry County deputy opened fire and killed him. The Major Investigation Assistance Team and McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office are investigating.
