At approximately 10:19 p.m. on 06/09/2025, a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper responded to a motor-vehicle crash along Highway 394 near Highway 11W in Sullivan County. The trooper encountered a male driver who he believed was intoxicated. As the trooper attempted to arrest him, the man fled on foot. The driver, later identified as 21-year-old Austin Walters, allegedly produced a firearm during the encounter. The trooper shot and killed him. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation and will provide findings to the 2nd Judicial District Attorney General.
