On June 12, 2025, a detained individual was found unresponsive in a cell at the Columbia County Detention Facility during a routine check. Deputies and EMS attempted life-saving measures before transporting the person to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office reported no signs of foul play. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the investigation. The individual's identity has not been released.
