OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 06/15/2025 at approximately 3 a.m., Maury County Sheriff's deputies responded to a gas station on the 2400 block of New Lewisburg Highway following reports of a couple fighting and suspected drug activity. Deputies encountered Clayton Tyler Dodson, 25, at the scene. According to the sheriff’s office, Dodson fired at deputies, striking the bulletproof vest of one deputy during the exchange. Deputies then returned fire, hitting Dodson multiple times. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. No information has been released regarding what led Dodson to open fire, whether he had a history of mental health issues, or if there was any prior connection with law enforcement. Officer identities have not been disclosed, and no bodycam footage has been made public so far.

Officer Kody Haley, an eight-month veteran, was previously involved in a May 9, 2025 officer-involved shooting in Meadow Lakes (near Wasilla). In that incident, he shot and critically wounded a woman who allegedly pointed a BB gun at him during a welfare check. He left Alaska and was hired in Tennessee where he shot and killed Dodson eight months later.
