On 06/05/2025, officers from the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to a 911 call at 8 Fair Oaks Drive regarding a reported assault involving 36-year-old Brian C. Czornyj. According to initial reports, Czornyj had been engaged in a mental health crisis and was allegedly attacking a Dutchess County Mobile Crisis Team member with a samurai sword. Upon arrival, officers observed Czornyj armed with the sword standing next to another man who was visibly injured. Officers issued repeated verbal commands for Czornyj to drop the weapon. When he did not comply and reportedly continued threatening behavior, an officer discharged their firearm, striking Czornyj. He was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital, where he later died.
