OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On June 18, 2025, around 11:10 p.m., a Washington State Patrol trooper observed a silver 2012 Mini Cooper traveling 79 mph in a 60 mph zone on southbound I-5 near milepost 189 and attempted a traffic stop. The driver did not stop, and the pursuit was initially called off. About 15 minutes later, a Snohomish County deputy saw the same Mini Cooper traveling over 100 mph and initiated another attempt to stop the vehicle. The driver exited the freeway at Edmonds and headed toward the ferry terminal. The Mini Cooper broke through safety cones and barriers at the Edmonds Ferry Dock and drove off the end into Puget Sound, dropping approximately 40 feet into the water. Five people were inside the car. Three individuals were rescued from the water, including the driver, and transported to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries. Two passengers, Melanie E. Ross and Portsha C. Sapp, were found deceased in the submerged vehicle. The vehicle was recovered from about 40 feet underwater around 3:30 a.m. on June 19. No ferry was docked at the time of the incident. The Washington State Patrol is leading the investigation.
