Nathaniel Taualai, 32, was shot and killed by Honolulu police on June 23, 2023, during a standoff on Kalauipo Street in Pearl City. Police said Taualai had broken into his ex-girlfriend’s home and refused to surrender. During the hours-long standoff, he allegedly had 2 knives and later took an unattended police rifle. Officers opened fire, hitting him four times. A report released two years later ruled the shooting justified as suicide by cop for unclear reasons despite police having shot him and there being no witness to confirm that he had been suicidal.
