On 07/08/2022, Fargo Police responded to a call about individuals slumped over inside a minivan in a garage on the 3400 block of 15th Avenue South. When officers arrived, Shane Netterville, 28, started driving the van forward toward them. Officer Adam O’Brien fired his weapon, striking Netterville. He was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead. The North Dakota Attorney General’s office and Fargo Police concluded the use of force was justified, and no charges were filed. Three years later, in 2025, Netterville’s family held a memorial at Springvale Cemetery. His brother, Ryan Netterville, described the lasting emotional toll on the family, including their loss of trust in police and repeated encounters with law enforcement during city meetings and public events. The family continues to call for an independent investigation into Shane’s death, which the Fargo Police Advisory Board voted against pursuing in December 2022.
