OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On Saturday, July 12, 2025, at approximately 8:08 p.m., a trooper with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by 27-year-old Jacob B. Hutchinson in Prattville, Alabama. The reason for the stop has not been disclosed.
Hutchinson refused to pull over, and troopers escalated a high-speed pursuit that continued southbound on Interstate 65 into the city of Montgomery. The chase ended when Hutchinson abandoned the motorcycle near Springfield Drive and fled on foot into a residential area.
According to official reports, Hutchinson was armed with a knife as troopers closed in on him. When confronted, he allegedly advanced toward the officers while still holding the knife. Troopers opened fire, striking and killing Hutchinson at the scene. He was pronounced dead shortly after.
Officials have not confirmed whether Hutchinson made verbal threats, how many officers discharged weapons, or whether body cameras or dashcam footage were in use at the time. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has taken over the case, as per protocol for officer-involved shootings involving state troopers. The names of the officers involved have not been released, and no further administrative updates have been made public.
