On Saturday evening, July 12, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m., New York City Police Department officers initiated a pursuit of 15-year-old Antonio Benitez following an alleged knifepoint robbery in Queens, New York. Benitez was reportedly riding an electric bicycle (e-bike) when police attempted to apprehend him.
Benitez refused to stop, and officers escalated a pursuit that led out of Queens and into New Hyde Park in Nassau County, crossing jurisdictional boundaries. According to police, officers continued following the teen as he traveled through city streets. Near the intersection of Lakeville Road and Bryant Avenue, Benitez was struck by a 2015 Lexus RX SUV that was unaffiliated with law enforcement. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not stated whether lights and sirens were active throughout the pursuit, how closely officers were following, or whether any tactical decisions contributed to the fatal crash. It has also not been confirmed whether officers observed traffic regulations during the cross-county pursuit.
The NYPD Force Investigation Division and Nassau County Police Department are jointly investigating the incident. The identity of the SUV driver has not been released, and no charges have been filed as of this writing. Officers involved in the pursuit have not been publicly identified, and no body camera or dashcam footage has been released.
