OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On Saturday, July 12, 2025, Roseville Police officers began pursuing a 16-year-old male driving a stolen Hyundai Sonata, reportedly taken from a dealership lot earlier that day. The pursuit entered the city of Warren and reached dangerously high speeds, though police have not publicly disclosed how fast the teen was driving or whether officers followed departmental pursuit policy.
At approximately 3:20 p.m., at the intersection of 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, the teen driver ran a red light while being chased and collided with a vehicle operated by 28-year-old Alex Habib, who was working as an Uber driver at the time. Habib’s vehicle was struck at high speed and heavily damaged. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead from crash-related injuries.
Habib was a married father of two and a resident of Madison Heights. He had reportedly just picked up a passenger before the crash. According to statements from his widow, Habib was a hardworking husband who had no involvement with the chase and was simply caught in the path of a reckless pursuit initiated by police.
The 16-year-old driver was taken into custody after the crash and faces multiple felony charges, including felony murder, fleeing and eluding, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle. His identity has not been released due to his age.
The Roseville Police Department has not confirmed whether officers were following protocol, using lights and sirens throughout the chase, or whether the decision to pursue a stolen vehicle justified the risk in a dense urban area. The incident is under investigation by Macomb County authorities, but no officers have been placed on leave and no internal review findings have been made public.
