OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On Sunday morning, July 13, 2025, at approximately 8:48 a.m., Suffolk County Police officers responded to reports of a stabbing behind a commercial strip mall at 2505 Middle Country Road in Centereach, New York. Witnesses reported seeing a man wielding a large knife and attacking another individual behind the row of stores.
Upon arrival, officers encountered 29-year-old Emilson Yoan Ordonez-Vanegas, who had allegedly just stabbed a 44-year-old man during an altercation. When police approached the scene, Ordonez-Vanegaz emerged from a concealed location and advanced toward the injured man while still holding the knife. Officers gave commands to stop, but he continued to move aggressively toward the stabbing victim, who lay wounded on the ground.
Fearing for the victim’s life, police opened fire and struck Ordonez-Vanegas. He was immediately disarmed and taken into custody. Emergency medical services transported him to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward. The stabbing victim was also transported to a nearby hospital in serious condition and underwent emergency surgery. His current condition has not been disclosed publicly.
Police have not released information about the relationship between the two men or the motive for the stabbing. Multiple officers were evaluated at the scene for stress-related impact. Body camera footage was reportedly reviewed by internal investigators but has not been made public.
The Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad is leading the investigation. As of this writing, the names of the officers involved in the shooting have not been released, and no administrative actions have been announced. There has been no public response from the deceased’s family, and no prior history of mental illness or criminal charges has been reported.
The incident has sparked concerns from some local residents about safety and crime levels in the area, though others commended police for acting swiftly to prevent further violence. The case remains open, pending full autopsy results and completion of the internal and homicide investigations.
