OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On the evening of July 14, 2025, around 10:00 p.m., Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies engaged with a male individual in his 40s in Guadalupe following a chain of events that began with a minor traffic crash on U.S. 60. The man fled the scene of the crash and proceeded to the residential area near Avenida del Yaqui and Calle Guadalupe.
Upon arrival, deputies attempted to communicate and de-escalate the situation, but the man made clear suicidal statements and exhibited agitated behavior. Despite repeated commands, he refused to comply and brandished a bladed weapon—a large knife or similar edged object. Deputies responded with lethal force, discharging their firearms and fatally wounding the man.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, with deputies securing the area and requesting additional law enforcement resources for the ensuing investigation. The exact details regarding the number of shots fired or which deputies fired have not been publicly disclosed.
Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing multiple commands to drop the weapon and saw the man move erratically before the shooting. Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has opened an internal investigation, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety is expected to conduct an independent review to assess compliance with use-of-force policies.
