In the early hours of July 16, 2025, at approximately 2:30 a.m., a person experiencing a mental health crisis entered the emergency department lobby at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Covington armed with a firearm. Two Covington Police Department officers responded rapidly to the scene after receiving reports of the armed individual.
Within seconds of the officers’ arrival, the individual fatally shot himself inside the hospital lobby, causing significant disruption. The hospital immediately placed its emergency services on diversion status to redirect incoming patients, and the main emergency entrance was blocked off.
