OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On July 19, 2025, a pedestrian was fatally struck in a hit-and-run collision at the intersection of Locust Street and Garfield Street in Butte, Montana. The victim died at the scene, and initial investigation focused on identifying the driver responsible. Later the same day, law enforcement located a vehicle believed to be involved in the hit-and-run and detained a person of interest connected to the case.
While the individual remained at the scene for questioning and investigation, he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound without any pursuit or physical confrontation with officers. The Montana Highway Patrol and Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement are conducting a joint investigation.
