OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On July 19, 2025, Cullman County deputies mobilized to serve a warrant in the rural Bethel community. Deputies were directed to the basement via an exterior entryway and made their presence known before locating the occupant barricaded behind a closed door.
Police announced the warrant and demanded the occupant open the door. The man reportedly resisted and declared his intent to use a firearm. Upon entry, deputies encountered him armed with a loaded shotgun. Officers fired a single round, striking the man. The man was transported to a hospital and died during arrest under unknown circumstances.
Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker reviewed body camera footage, ballistic evidence, and other materials, and formally ruled the shooting “justified,” stating the deputies acted as trained when confronting a deadly threat. He has recommended confirmation of that decision to a grand jury.
